Keep Your Trail Camera Active During Late Season
Keeping a trail camera alive during late season is not easy. Batteries lose their juice quicker as temperatures fall, and snow can build up over the lens. Many bucks have been shot and the number of big bucks on the landscape has dwindled. If you have been running a camera since the beginning of summer, you may think you have captured every buck in that area by now. The reality is, however, there is always a chance a new buck arrives, and that especially holds true in the late season.
Here is a buck we recently picked up on trail camera in Nebraska. We have had 12 cameras running on that property since July and we have never gotten a pic of this buck. Now that we know he is there, we can set a few more cameras up on that side of the farm and try to see if we can determine where he is spending most of his time.
A buck that has been living on your neighbor’s property can run out of food and make an excursion to explore other food options. If he likes what he finds on your property, chances are good that he will stick around. Knowing a big buck is living in your hunting area is a powerful motivational tool to keep you in your tree stand during the harshest conditions we face as hunters.
A couple years ago I was home for Christmas and I only had a few days to hunt. I decided that no matter how cold it was, I was going to go hunting. I hunted when the actual temperature was -8 F, and the wind chill was -32 F. I was really cold by the end of the sit, but I stayed in the stand the entire evening because I knew there was a mature buck living in the area. I didn’t see him during that hunt, but the point is that I stayed in the tree and “in the game” for longer than I probably would have if I hadn’t gotten a recent trail cam pic of that buck. Hope is a powerful thing, and if you know that a big buck is there, your hope gauge goes from empty to full in a hurry!
