Crush Your Hitlist
The “Fall Shuffle” is here. This is a time when new bucks are exploring areas to set up shop for the fall. So what’s the BEST deer attractant to put out right now to get the attention of the roamers? If I had to pick just one, it would be the Crush Wild Berry granular attractant. I like the 5 lb bag because it’s easier to carry, and a lot of my trail cams are a moderate walk in. If I’m going to be out checking cameras and refilling feed/mineral sites, the first thing I do is check the 3-day forecast. If there is a better than 50% chance of rain, I’ll hold off on putting out any protein-based attractants until after the rain.
My favorite combination to use right now is the Crush Wild Berry Block topped with Wild Berry granular Crush. The granular will get them to the spot, and the block will hold them there between refills.
If you are putting out product at an established mineral site, don’t put the block/granular directly in the mineral site. Mineral sites tend to hold moisture which you don’t want the proteins to absorb. Instead, place it next to your mineral site on flat ground. I like to make sure there is no vegetation between my trail camera and the block, because there is nothing more frustrating than false triggers due to weeds, grasses, or branches swaying in the breeze.
As for camera positioning, try to avoid pointing toward the east or west so your camera isn’t being sun-blinded. I like to position it above the deer pointed slightly downward, so the flash has some ground to bounce off of.
You want to frame the image so that whether a buck has his head up or head down, you will still get a good picture of him in frame. It sometimes takes a bit of trial and error, but once you get it dialed in it should stay that way (unless a raccoon decides to use your camera as a step stool/launch pad). The point of getting good trail cam pics is so you can start building your hitlist. I know there are bucks that in the flesh when I see them, my first thought is that they are a shooter, but because I recognize them from my trail cam, I know they are young and need another year to reach their potential.
Get out now and enjoy putting bucks right where you want them. Attractant sites are perfect for getting every angle of the rack so you can decide if they meet your harvest criteria. With bucks breaking up the bachelor groups, you want your target buck to feel like he has everything he needs on your hunting property to feel safe and secure. Don’t let him leave hungry!
