Frost Seeding
What is frost seeding? Frost seeding takes advantage of mother nature’s freeze/thaw cycle to work small seeds like clover into the soil. The pickup and settlement of soil as it freezes and thaws works the seed into the soil allowing it to germinate when soil temperatures increase in the spring.
When to frost seed? The key to success is getting the clover seed on the soil while your area is in the freeze/thaw/freeze cycle, most common in late winter and early spring.
Where to frost seed? Prime locations for frost seeding are existing clover plots where there is bare soil or food plots from last year that were planted in annuals, such as soybeans or brassicas; this method will help to fill in the bare spots. For fields previously planted in annuals, you need a high percentage of exposed soil (i.e. 90%+) for frost seeding.
How to frost seed? Read the directions on your clover seed bag for coverage recommendation, but understand these guidelines are for a prepared seedbed. With frost seeding, a heavier application (i.e. 50% more) is required for better results. For equipment, all you need is a broadcast spreader and set it to the smallest setting where the clover seed can just pass through the gate. Note, when broadcast spreading, it’s better to spread the clover seed a bit too thin and have to apply twice versus running out of seed too soon.
