How to Strengthen Your Food Plot Using Ani-Logics™
I talk to a lot of hunters at trade shows and when I ask them if they use any feed or minerals, a common response is “No, we plant food plots, so our deer have everything they need already.” I then ask them, “How do you do last fall hunting over your food plot?” To which they typically respond, “Saw a big one on the other end of the food plot but he never came in range.”
It’s no secret that deer are creatures of habit, and when a food source such as a food plot is being utilized, deer will be back in that area on a regular basis. The trick is to entice the deer into the food plot at a specific location which will maximize your chance of getting a shot at a buck. Basically, you can use Ani-Logics™ to create a staging area for deer to use before they enter the food plot where you want them to.
Let me be blatantly obvious: I’m NOT talking about shooting deer over a bait pile here in Minnesota. I’m talking about establishing a feed or mineral site near my stand where I am supplementing their nutrition IN THE OFF SEASON. As deer move from their bedding area to the food source, they will become accustom to taking the trail near my stand, so that even a month after all the feed is gone, they will still at least walk by that area to see if anything is around before they step out into the food plot.
This trail cam pic shows several bucks using my feeder (the top has blown off in the wind) before they move on towards my food plot.
Another thing to consider when you think about food plot plants, is that even the best combination of high quality forage does not contain the right amount of minerals that a buck needs to maximize his genetic potential in terms of antler growth. From research at Ani-Logics™, we found that un-supplemented deer in many areas throughout the US were deficient in at least one key micro mineral (even in southern Iowa). I’m not saying you shouldn’t plant food plots. I’m saying you shouldn’t just plant food plots. You can increase available nutrition across your entire property by properly managing early successional habitat as well as using supplemental feed and/or minerals.
As always, follow local feeding regulations concerning the use of our products. Here in Minnesota, we can use feed up to 10 days before hunting season. What I’ve done at my dad’s farm is to put a feed site 30 yards from my tree stand which overlooks a ¼ acre food plot. The deer have been hitting the feed site on their way to the food plot all summer, so when I pull the feeder at the beginning of September, I feel confident about seeing a buck opening weekend that is a regular customer at my feed site.
This buck has been a regular at my combination food plot/feed site. He isn’t a shooter this year, but I am glad he is getting high quality nutrition as he will be a great buck in the comings years.
